The Catalogue of the Retrospective Bibliography of Articles comprises 10,000.000 catalogue leaflets containing lists of articles from periodicals (newspapers, journals, collections) published on the area of Yugoslavia in the period from the end of the 18th century all through to the year 1945.
The compiling of the data base started in November 1950, and the team leader and organizer of the work was Dr Mate Ujević. After training the staff and receiving detailed elaborate instructions, there were some 700 cataloguers working on the data base, mostly university professors and students, working in 775 university and specialized libraries. The headquarters and biggest cataloguing location was in Zagreb. There were two other bigger cataloguing centres – in Ljubljana and Belgrade, and there were a range of smaller locations – in Dubrovnik, Pula, Rijeka, Split, Sarajevo, Skoplje and elsewhere. The result of this grand work is the present-day Catalogue of the Retrospective Bibliography of Articles, classified in three separate catalogues: author catalogue (around
2,200,000 leaflets), subject-matter catalogue (around 3,500,000 leaflets) and professional catalogue (around 3,500,000 leaflets).
The Institute of Lexicography is also in possession of a very valuable Catalogue of solved pseudonyms, codes/ciphers and initials. The Catalogue also includes registered hidden authorships of many writers and journalists who used to publish in the Croatian periodicals.
The knowledge covering the areas of 44 different professions (historical and social sciences, politics, law, education, philosophy, literature, applied art, architecture, music, medicine, technical science and aeronautics), comprised in more than 10 million leaflets, make this catalogue a veritable treasure of the present time and a great source for future research.
The Catalogue is open to public access.
