The Miroslav Krleža Institute of Lexicography built on the Croatian five-century-long lexicographic tradition a work that can stand alongside the greatest European and world lexicographic accomplishments. It was due to the initiative of Miroslav Krleža that a special institution was established in Zagreb in 1950, the activity of which has been continued by the present-day Institute, the only Croatian institution that has been systematically engaged in lexicography for sixty years.
The Miroslav Krleža Institute of Lexicography is a public institution of special status for the Republic of Croatia. As bearer of the work in the activities of lexicography and encyclopaedism of specific interest for the Republic of Croatia, The Institute published more than 250 different encyclopaedias, dictionaries, lexicons and other issues that represent an important contribution to the maintaining and rising of the Croatian intellectual standard. The Institute’s editions are traditionally reliable and explain in a distinguishable way facts relating to the Croatian heritage and the social reality.
