Members of the Latvian National Encyclopedia’s editorial board paid a study visit to the Institute of Lexicography on 5 and 6 September. The visit was organised as part of the Erasmus+ programme, the largest European Union programme for education, training, youth, and sport.

The Latvian National Encyclopedia, whose chief editor is Valters Ščerbinskis, is a general online encyclopedia that currently contains around 4000 articles. The National Encyclopedia’s editorial board was founded in 2015 within the framework of the National Library of Latvia.

The aim of this study visit was to acquaint Latvian encyclopedists with the work of the Institute of Lexicography, primarily the Croatian Encyclopedia, one of the Institute’s fundamental editions.

At the beginning of this year, two classic publications of the Miroslav Krleža Institute of Lexicography, the Encyclopedia of Music (2^nd edition, 1971–1977) and the Lexicon of Yugoslav Music (1984), were included in the RILM Music Encyclopedias, an international electronic collection of music encyclopedias and lexicons.

The presentation of this project was held on 15 March in the institute’s Great Hall, in the presence of numerous respected musicologists and representatives of major media companies.

Dr Bruno Kragić, the director general of the Institute of Lexicography, greeted all present and expressed his satisfaction that the Institute’s publications are available in the international repertoire of music encyclopedias.

Dr Filip Hameršak, director of the Institute of Lexicography, pointed out that the Institute has been publishing online as well as digitised classic editions for more than fifteen years, based on the principle of open access through the Institute’s portal. However, this kind of inclusion in the global database significantly increases their international visibility and accessibility, and thus their level of global relevance.

On 12 March 2023, Dr Christian Voβ, head of the Department of South-Slavic Languages and Cultural Studies of the Institute of Slavic and Hungarian Studies, Faculty of Language, Literature and Humanities of the Humboldt University of Berlin arrived for a long-expected visit to The Miroslav Krleža Institute of Lexicography. In conversations with several employees of the Institute of Lexicography and during a tour of individual departments and services, the history and activities of the Institute and the Croatian encyclopedics in general were presented to Professor Voβ, and much was also learned about the current position of Slavic studies and humanities in Germany, especially since the professor served as deputy dean at the mentioned faculty in several mandates.

Organised by the Miroslav Krleža Institute of Lexicography and presided by the Institute's director general, Bruno Kragić, the second European and North American Encyclopedia Conference was held from 6 to 8 October 2022, bringing together editors and publishers from around ten countries.

Representatives of general encyclopedias from Bulgaria, Croatia, Denmark, Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, Norway, Slovakia, and Sweden discussed the role of encyclopedias in providing reliable and verified information about culture, art, science, and society as well as preserving national and cultural identity. The first European and North American encyclopedia conference was held in Brussels in 2019, organised by the Great Norwegian Encyclopedia, the European Parliamentary Research Service, and the Mission of Norway to the EU.

The international conference Encyclopedistics 2020 – Achievements and Challenges, organised on the 70^th anniversary of the founding of the Miroslav Krleža Institute of Lexicography, was held on 15 and 16 October in the Institute's great hall, and simultaneously online. Scholars and experts from Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Italy, Hungary, Germany, Poland, the USA, Serbia, Spain, and Croatia exchanged experiences and the results of their research. The conference was opened by the Institute's director general, Bruno Kragić, and the introductory presentation was held by Filip Hameršak, member of the Institute's Board of Directors and assistant editor-in-chief of the Croatian Biographical Lexicon.
