An International Scientific Symposium entitled ‘The Encyclopedia of Yugoslavia and the Production of Knowledge during the Socialist Regime (1950–1990)’ will be held at the Miroslav Krleža Institute of Lexicography on 18–19 September 2025. The symposium is organised by the Humboldt University in Berlin, the Croatian Institute of History, and the Miroslav Krleža Institute of Lexicography.
The symposium is organised as part of the research project ‘Die Enzyklopädie Jugoslawiens (1955–1990) zwischen jugoslawischem und subjugoslawischem Nationbuilding’ / ‘The Encyclopedia of Yugoslavia: Between Yugoslav and Sub-Yugoslav Nation-Building(s) (1955–90)’, funded by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft), within the framework of a cooperation agreement between the Miroslav Krleža Institute of Lexicography and the Humboldt University.
The symposium will feature international and local researchers presenting on topics related to the history of the creation and implementation of the ‘Encyclopedia of Yugoslavia’ project under the leadership of Miroslav Krleža, analyses of texts published in both editions of the encyclopedia, and the history of knowledge production during the socialist regime in Croatia and Yugoslavia, particularly in the fields of historiography, political science, literature, art history, philology, and related academic disciplines, as well as in the essayistic writings of public intellectuals.
