Dr Bruno Kragić, Director General of the Miroslav Krleža Institute of Lexicography, participated as one of the invited speakers at the international scientific conference ‘Encyclopaedism and the Albanian World’, organised by the Centre for Encyclopaedic and Albanological Publications, a research unit of the Academy of Sciences of Albania. The conference was held in Tirana on 29 and 30 June 2026.
The conference’s main objective was to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience in the field of encyclopaedics, particularly relating to the presentation on the work on the Albanian Encyclopaedia, a joint project of the Academy of Sciences of Albania and the Kosovo Academy of Sciences and Arts, launched in 2022.
Bruno Kragić, who also serves as chairman of the European Encyclopedia Network, an association bringing together 18 encyclopaedia publishers from 17 countries, focused in his presentation on the challenges and threats facing encyclopaedias since the beginning of the 21st century. Wikipedia has prompted the transition of encyclopaedias from print to digital formats, while the latest challenge comes from artificial intelligence. However, Kragić argues that the former represents merely a change in the mode of presentation, since Wikipedia is not an encyclopaedia in the strict sense of the term, whereas the latter is a language model for which encyclopaedias are among the principal sources of content, which it does not create, but merely gathers and presents.
